What really happened after the first Thanksgiving?
How did that first harvest mark the beginning of the end of English reliance on their Tribal neighbors, and why did the relationship brutally change?
In return for their charity and compassion, the Wampanoag and other Tribes got genocide, loss of land, and centuries of oppression.
Did you know:
- 80-90% of the American Indian population was murdered by the 1880s.
- Tribes were deliberately given blankets infested with smallpox.
- More than 500 treaties were broken resulting in 1.5 billion acres of land being taken from the Tribes.
- Tribes were starved through the withholding of food rations and killing of the buffalo.
The demonization of American Indians to the American public, the fairy tale of Thanksgiving, and the Hollywood reel of Indians carved out stereotypes of Native Americans that exist to this day. Now, centuries later, the effects of U.S. history and policy toward the tribes are evident.
