Fresh Produce, Healthy Cooking
By Partnership
Research suggests that the “modern” Western diet is detrimental to the health of all consumers, especially Native Elders who face disparate rates of obesity. Our Program Partner Deb helped her community in Wanblee, South Dakota gain access to fresh, healthy food by organizing an Ancestral Produce Distribution through the Native American Aid (NAA) program of Partnership With Native Americans® (PWNA).
Deb said that diabetes and obesity are prevalent in her community, but events like the produce distribution show people how to cook healthily. Deb shared, “This was awesome for our community – all healthy food, not outdated like we’re used to. A lot of people are diabetics, and this is how we should be eating.” Native men and women have a significantly higher prevalence of diabetes than other racial and cultural groups.
Deb also shared that local produce prices have skyrocketed, and some foods like squash and bison meat are hard to find. She noted, “A container of strawberries is $7.99. The food we’re getting shows single, young mothers what our kids need to be eating. They don’t have to fry food. This might encourage people to start gardens, and I sure appreciate it.”
Local mom Brianna attended with her children, 2-year-old Charles and 4-year-old Arrow. She told us, “It’s an amazing help to the community. It feels good to actually get fresh produce and buffalo meat. My little family loves zucchini, so they are super excited that we got some today.”
Other attendees relayed similar sentiments. Prairie shared, “It’s amazing because it’s fresh.” Another beneficiary, Melinda, stated, “It’s great to see fresh vegetables instead of junk food or canned goods.” Recipient Cecelia picked up produce for her mom who lives out of town. “I really appreciate this. Thank you, guys!”
PWNA staff also offered items like bison meatballs, salad, and tea. A woman who sampled the tea remarked, “I really like that – my favorite. Thank you!”
