PWNA Newman’s Own Food Justice for Kids Prize Finalist: Why Your Vote Matters
Empowering the Next Generation in Food Sovereignty
PWNA’s 4D Growing Youth Leaders in Food Sovereignty initiative—a transformative program dedicated to fostering multigenerational involvement in food sovereignty and sustainability. PWNA’s Indigenous Foodways Initiative supports communities reconnecting with their cultural roots, where traditions and activities are centered on holistic growth and community well-being. In this journey, every member of the community plays a vital role.
Our program offers three key benefits:
- Hands-On Learning: Participants gain practical experience in sustainable agriculture, equipping them with the skills needed to cultivate a healthy lifestyle.
- Sustainable Foodways: We implement innovative and sustainable food systems that not only feed the body but also strengthen cultural ties by reintroducing Native foods and traditions.
- Cultural Reconnection: By empowering youth to engage in these practices, we create a safe space for healing and foster a vibrant community where their talents can thrive.
This initiative is about more than just growing food; it’s about growing leaders. We’re teaching a new generation to create sustainable foodways, whether they come from a long line of farmers or are entirely new to the field. We’re not just cultivating gardens—we’re cultivating a future.
Our innovative approach includes modern techniques like hydroponics, advanced irrigation systems, and subterranean greenhouses, allowing us to extend growing seasons and bring back traditional foods that have been missing for generations. By doing so, we’re not just preserving culture—we’re revitalizing it. And when our youth learn early on that food is medicine, it becomes a way of life that nourishes both body and spirit, creating a legacy that will be passed down for generations.
Since 2014, our program has planted deep roots in the community, with eight annual cohorts already making a lasting impact. Our surveys show that approximately 54% of participants experience profound, life-changing effects in multiple areas, with 100% seeing benefits in at least one of our four focus areas.
We’ve witnessed remarkable growth, such as the San Carlos Nazioni Dozo community, which started with a tiny grow house and has since expanded to include farming acreage, irrigation systems, traditional food preparation, and community-run markets. This is a testament to the power of community-driven change.
Now, we’re ready to take our program to the next level. We have a network of dedicated individuals—chefs, contractors, suppliers—ready to support us as we expand. With your vote, you can help us secure the resources we need to make this vision a reality.
Your support is crucial. By voting for our initiative, you’re not just helping us grow food—you’re helping us grow a stronger, healthier, and more connected community. Join us in making a lasting impact that will benefit generations to come.
