Larry Running Turtle Salazar, a respected Indigenous activist and educator, passed away at the age of 68 due to complications from chronic pain and multiple knee surgeries. He was known for his deep commitment to Native American culture and was involved in numerous community ceremonies, including leading Indigenous naming ceremonies.

Salazar was instrumental in advocating for the protection of sacred Native American burial grounds when, in the mid-1990s, construction on Ennis Joslin Road disturbed an ancient burial site. Despite his efforts to halt the disturbance and rename the road in honor of Native Americans, his requests were denied. He later established a tradition of blessing the sacred grounds and leading a community march to honor those buried there.

Salazar’s passing is seen as a significant loss to his community, with many remembering him for his guidance, wisdom, and passion for Native American heritage. His niece, Vonnie Lynn, recalled his final moments, describing a room filled with love and Salazar’s blessings for his family. In his final years, Salazar continued to be active, even leading ceremonies at the sacred site despite battling kidney cancer.

His legacy will be carried on by others, including Dan Bearheart Lara, who was appointed as the new Lipan Apache elder for Corpus Christi.
