In Rapid City, South Dakota, Kyle Mesteth, an Oglala Lakota, has been appointed as the first skateboarding coach for the Pine Ridge High School skateboard team, marking a significant moment in his life as he once skated at the same school. Growing up in the mid-90s, Mesteth and his friends were among the few skaters on the Pine Ridge Reservation, often facing restrictions like “no skating” signs. Now, in 2024, the school is embracing skateboarding with an official team.
This initiative is rare in the Midwest, as skateboarding is not recognized as a sanctioned sport by the South Dakota High School Athletic Association. Mesteth emphasizes the unique challenge of developing a skateboarding program from scratch and views skateboarding as both a sport and an art form that fosters self-expression and builds confidence in youth.
Through his project, Ground Control, Mesteth has been promoting skateboarding, offering free equipment, and creating a safe space for kids to engage in art and music. He has also been involved in organizing community skate events, including a competition in memory of his cousin, Toby Eagle Bull. The new team is currently in its planning stages, accepting sign-ups, and ensuring boards are available for those in need.
