The Navajo Code Talkers played a crucial role in helping the U.S. win World War II by creating an “unbreakable code” using their native language. However, articles praising their achievements were recently removed from Department of Defense (DoD) websites. Dr. Zonnie Gorman, a historian and daughter of one of the original Code Talkers, expressed her personal distress over the removal, linking it to President Trump’s executive order on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
A DoD spokesperson clarified that the content was removed during an “auto-removal process” and would be restored. Navajo Nation officials, including Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley and President Buu Nygren, called for an apology or explanation. They emphasized that the Navajo Nation has a unique, political relationship with the federal government, distinct from DEI initiatives. It’s unclear when the content will be fully restored.
