What is the Indigenous Coffee Movement?

The Indigenous coffee movement refers to a growing, grassroots effort by Indigenous communities, primarily in North America, to reclaim, participate in, and reshape the coffee industry in ways that align with their cultural values, economic goals, and sovereignty.

While coffee itself is not native to the Americas (it originated in Africa and spread globally through colonization), Indigenous people are increasingly:

Owning coffee roasting businesses, often based on reservations or in urban Native communities.
Sourcing coffee beans from Indigenous farmers, especially in Central and South America.
Creating visibility for Native-made products, promoting Native identity and storytelling through branding.
Using coffee as a tool for economic development, especially in communities where unemployment is high.
Focusing on ethical practices like organic, fair trade, or direct trade sourcing.

The ongoing injustice of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) is the culmination of a spectrum of violence and neglect perpetrated disproportionately against Indigenous Peoples—it reflects the intersection of genocide, colonization, and systemic violence. These crimes are not isolated incidents; they are the direct result of a long history of government laws, policies, practices, and programs that have marginalized Indigenous communities and created conditions that increase the vulnerability of Indigenous people.

A portion of the proceeds from these coffee beans goes to the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center (NIWRC).
