Two Episcopal bishops in Massachusetts, Douglas J. Fisher and Julia E. Whitworth, issued a joint statement supporting five bills known as the Indigenous legislative agenda, which are currently being considered by state lawmakers. The legislation seeks to address issues important to Indigenous communities, including education reform, cultural preservation, and the replacement of Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The bishops emphasized that this support is a necessary beginning toward repairing historical harm and affirmed the right of Indigenous people to preserve and tell their own stories. Representing over 53,000 Episcopalians, the bishops also announced plans to visit Deer Island on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, acknowledging its history as a site of suffering for Indigenous people during King Philip’s War. They expressed a desire for continued learning and spiritual solidarity with Indigenous communities.
