The Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians has expressed concern about the potential dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education, following President Trump’s March 20 executive order directing the Secretary of Education to facilitate its closure. Austin Lowes, the tribe’s chairman, emphasized that the closure could negatively impact Native American communities, as the U.S. government is treaty-bound to provide basic services like education in exchange for land. The tribe relies on federal funding, including $541 million for schools in low-income Michigan areas and $12 million for schools on military bases and reservations. Lowes urged Trump to collaborate with tribal leaders to improve, not cut, services for Native American communities.
