Jennifer Maveety, a respected librarian at the Bad River Public Tribal Library in northern Wisconsin, was laid off in April due to a Trump administration directive to cut non-essential federal programs. Her position, funded by a federal grant, was eliminated following a March 14 executive order. Hired in late 2022, Maveety had successfully reopened and revitalized the tribal library, making it a vital community hub.

Public backlash over her firing was swift, and on May 21, she was notified of her reinstatement after a federal court issued an injunction. She returned to work on May 27, noting it felt as though she had never left.

Maveety is the library’s only staff member, running programs for children and adults, assisting with job applications, and promoting Indigenous literature. The library plays a critical role in preserving Native history and providing access to banned Indigenous books. Maveety emphasized the importance of accurate, free information in the face of growing book bans and threats to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Despite being back at work, she remains concerned about the future stability of federal funding.
