Emergency Preparedness

Emergency Preparedness

  • Description – Our Emergency Preparedness service builds capacity by helping Tribal communities focus on readiness to respond when disaster or environmental emergencies strike. Through Emergency Preparedness, we support Tribal communities in end-to-end disaster planning, from asset mapping to detail their community resources and gaps, to identifying effective response strategies and organized response plans for specific types of emergencies, to training Tribal citizens in CPR and First Aid, and use of AAEDs.
  • DBA/Region – Northern Plains Reservation Aid® (NPRA) (Northern Plains), Southwest Reservation Aid® (SWRA), Southwest
  • Service Type – Long-Term Solutions, Grant funded

[CERT] is a wonderful way to help us organize ourselves because, unfortunately, there’s a reason why MMIW has become a movement in Indian Country. It’s something we can’t ignore, and it’s better to be prepared and know how to do these types of things. 2.3 million acres is a large area to search when someone is missing. The more educated we are, the better we can ensure that people are found quicker.

I wanted to utilize my skills to help my people. I was excited when I heard about this [CERT] training – it’s pretty handy, and I really appreciate it. I hope I don’t have to use it, but it’s going to be there if I ever do.

Stats For This Specific Service

  • The typical reservation home has a whole room less than the national median, often leading to overcrowding.
  • Census tracts that are majority Black, Hispanic, or Native American experience 50% greater vulnerability to wildfire compared to other census tracts.
  • According to data from the National Congress of American Indians, Tribes receive unequal recovery aid. Tribal nations receive less than half of what the Department of Homeland Security grants US states for recovery efforts daily.
