The 36th annual Moundville Native American Festival, held at the University of Alabama’s Moundville Archaeological Park, celebrated Native American culture and educated attendees, especially students, about the history of Alabama’s indigenous tribes. The festival featured representatives from tribes such as the Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Seminole, Coushatta, and Muscogee, emphasizing the ongoing presence and cultural vitality of these communities despite historical displacement due to the Indian Removal Act.
Festival director Marsha Holley highlighted the importance of connecting contemporary communities with their indigenous pasts, dispelling myths that Native Americans are extinct. Attendees engaged with tribal members, learned about traditional dances and clothing, and experienced the rich cultural heritage that persists today. The event aimed to counter stereotypes and foster understanding among younger generations, showcasing the diverse traditions and continued relevance of Native American culture. Additional events at the Moundville Archaeological Park are planned for October to further promote this heritage.
