Angel Goodrich, a proud enrolled member of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians, is best known as KU’s all-time assists leader and one of the toughest, most competitive point guards in program history. Despite suffering two major knee injuries early in her college career, she led the Jayhawks to back-to-back NCAA Sweet 16 appearances and played professionally in the WNBA and overseas.
After basketball, Goodrich found a new calling as a firefighter with the Tulsa Fire Department—a physically demanding job she earned despite her small stature and lack of firefighting legacy. Inspired by a news segment on wildfires and encouraged by her mother, she embraced the challenge, quickly proving herself in training.
Now in her third year with the TFD, Goodrich sees firefighting as the perfect extension of her team-first mindset developed through sports. Living back in her hometown of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, she continues to be a visible role model—especially for Native youth—showing that perseverance, pride in heritage, and hard work can open doors far beyond athletics.
“I know a lot of young girls were looking up to me with basketball,” she says. “This is just another way to inspire them—and let them know there’s more out there for them.”
