The Biden-Harris administration unveiled a 10-year National Plan on Native Language Revitalization at the 2024 White House Tribal Nations Summit, aimed at preserving and revitalizing Indigenous languages in the U.S. The plan, developed by multiple government agencies, seeks to address the historical and ongoing effects of the federal government’s policies that aimed to erase Indigenous languages, particularly through the Indian Boarding School system.
Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland emphasized the cultural significance of Indigenous languages, stating they connect communities to their ancestors and heritage. The plan includes strategic investments in education, particularly in language immersion programs for Native youth, and aims to increase the number of proficient speakers. It also highlights the need for congressional action to prevent the extinction of Native languages, predicting that fewer than 20 Indigenous languages will be spoken by 2050 if current trends continue.
The Department of Interior’s Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative has brought attention to the long-lasting harm caused by these schools. The initiative and the national plan are part of a broader effort to address the systemic harms of forced assimilation and support the survival and growth of Native languages and cultures. The plan also involves funding for language revitalization programs within the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE), with a cooperative agreement to provide $7.5 million in grants for Native language immersion programs. The initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy to support Indigenous communities and protect their languages for future generations.
