California is confronting its colonial past by renaming “Squaw Valley Way” in Sacramento County to “River Valley Way,” due to the original name’s use of a racial and sexist slur against Native American women. The change, approved unanimously by the county’s Board of Supervisors, was made in collaboration with local Native American tribes. The renaming is part of a broader state effort: in 2024, officials announced that 30 locations across 15 counties would be renamed by early 2025. Over 60 places in California had included the offensive term, which has since been widely removed. Native leaders emphasized that such names are painful reminders of historical oppression.
