The Dallas City Council unanimously voted to rename three West Dallas lakes to honor Native American tribes historically connected to North Texas. The new names — Comanche Nahmi Lake, Wichita ita:iʔh Lake, and Lipan Apache Mbátí Lake — blend tribal identities with Native words meaning “sister.”
The renaming, which applies to lakes along the Trinity River, received strong public support. Tribal representatives emphasized the importance of visibility, recognition, and inclusion for Native communities in Dallas. Rachel Salinas of the Lipan Apache Tribe highlighted her tribe’s deep ties to Texas history, while Cherokee Nation member Mark Smith underscored how naming public spaces can affirm cultural identity and promote equity.
Council Member Cara Mendelsohn supported the change but urged the city to ensure signage is clear for public navigation, emergency services, and educational purposes. She also suggested adding historical markers to explain the significance of the new names.
