Deb Haaland, former Interior Secretary and a member of Laguna Pueblo, has launched her Democratic campaign for governor of New Mexico. If elected, she would become the first Native American woman to serve as governor of any state. Haaland is a prominent advocate for conservation and clean energy and has opposed unchecked oil and gas development, supporting the Green New Deal. New Mexico is a key oil production state, and Haaland’s leadership would oversee a significant financial boost from the Permian Basin.

The state has been under Democratic control for statewide offices, though the governor’s position has alternated between parties since the 1980s. Haaland’s campaign follows the term limit of Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. As New Mexico grapples with rising crime and homelessness, Haaland’s platform may focus on leveraging the state’s oil wealth to fund progressive initiatives like free school meals and zero-tuition education. The Republican contender in 2022, Mark Ronchetti, lost by 6 points, with his campaign emphasizing different economic approaches to oil revenue.
