On Christmas Eve, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren signed legislation making the Navajo language, Diné bizaad, the official language of the Navajo Nation. Nygren expressed his goal of revitalizing the language, emphasizing its importance to the culture and identity of the Navajo people. Delegate Shawna Claw, who sponsored the legislation, highlighted that the language is central to the Navajo value system and way of life.
Nygren praised the hard work of Navajo language teachers and discussed plans to further support the language, including training legal professionals to speak Navajo. He also expressed his commitment to integrating the language into government operations, such as signage in Navajo and the use of Navajo terms by police.
The President plans to collaborate with the Diné Language Teachers Association and ensure adequate funding to support language education. Nygren recently hired Peter Thomas, a respected Navajo language teacher, as an advisor to help implement these initiatives.
