Recent cuts to federal funding and staffing under the Trump administration have deeply affected Native American communities, putting essential services like healthcare, education, law enforcement, and environmental protection at risk. These cuts threaten the stability of tribal programs that rely on federal support, including clinics, schools, and wildfire management teams.

Tribal leaders stress that these cuts violate legal obligations the U.S. government has to tribes, based on historic treaties and trust responsibilities. The reductions have caused immediate disruptions, such as layoffs at the Indian Health Service (IHS) and staff cuts at tribal colleges, and could have long-term consequences for tribal communities’ well-being. Furthermore, cuts to environmental agencies and programs related to water quality, natural resources, and public safety pose a serious risk to tribal lands and resources.

Despite some temporary reprieves, the ongoing threat of further cuts leaves tribes uncertain about their future access to vital services. Tribal leaders are advocating for a reversal of these cuts to preserve the legal, social, and economic rights of Native communities.
