Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico signed SB163 into law, allowing students to express their cultural heritage at school ceremonies. The law, which passed unanimously in both chambers, prevents school boards and charter schools from stopping Native American students from wearing culturally significant clothing, accessories, or objects during graduation events. Tribal members from across the state attended the signing, celebrating the legislation. The law takes effect immediately, ensuring Native American students can express their heritage at this year’s graduation ceremonies. Governor Lujan Grisham emphasized the importance of honoring cultural identities, and New Mexico joins 18 other states with similar protections.
