The Trump administration’s efforts to cut federal spending, led by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), have affected a nonprofit serving the Rosebud Sioux Reservation. Sicangu Co., based in South Dakota, lost a $547,000 federal grant intended to fund the planting of fruit trees and berry bushes in the community. The trees and bushes were set to help combat food insecurity and support local food sovereignty programs. This loss is part of broader cuts, including the cancellation of an $8 million USDA grant aimed at addressing food insecurity in tribal areas. Although Sicangu Co. plans to continue some of its gardening efforts with other funding, the loss of this grant will impact long-term food production. The USDA did not specify the reason for the cancellation, though it was tied to a broader review of federal contracts. The loss highlights the vulnerability of federal funding for marginalized communities, and Sicangu Co. is concerned about further cuts.
