The Oak Ridge Fire, which began on June 28, 2025, near Window Rock on the Navajo Nation, has rapidly grown to over 9,800 acres with zero containment, prompting evacuation orders for hundreds of residents. As of July 2, more than 350 people have been evacuated from multiple communities including Hunters Point, Saint Michael’s, Oak Springs, Pine Spring, Klagetoh, and Cross Canyon. The fire, fueled by dry vegetation and strong winds, advanced six miles in a matter of hours and produced flames as high as 200 feet. Firefighters were temporarily pulled back for safety but have since resumed efforts, with 350 personnel and airtankers now battling the blaze.

In response, the Navajo Nation declared a state of emergency, enacting Stage 2 fire restrictions and requesting additional resources. The fire’s cause is still under investigation but may have originated from wood haulers unintentionally igniting a small fire that quickly spread. Federal and regional incident management teams have taken control of the response, focusing efforts on key areas to prevent further spread and protect critical infrastructure.

Emergency shelters have been established in Fort Defiance and Ganado, and officials are urging residents to follow the “Ready, Set, Go!” evacuation protocol. Despite the danger, some residents have chosen to remain in their homes, prompting renewed calls from leaders to prioritize safety. Community organizations and individuals, including 11-year-old Miss Navajo Elementary, are leading donation drives to support displaced families with supplies such as water, food, and hygiene items.

Officials stress the importance of relying on verified information and avoiding the fire zone, as unauthorized visitors have hampered response efforts. No monetary donations are being accepted by the Navajo Nation at this time, and residents are being warned about online scams. Leaders continue to emphasize safety, preparedness, and unity as the community faces this ongoing emergency.
