Illinois’ legislative session ended without passing a bill to ban Native American mascots in K-12 schools, despite strong support from Native advocates. House Bill 1237 cleared the House but stalled in the Senate due to concerns over the financial burden on schools to change mascots. Advocates argue that such imagery harms Native identity by perpetuating outdated and inaccurate portrayals.

Meanwhile, a separate Native-related bill, House Bill 1605, passed both chambers and awaits the governor’s signature. It allows tribal nations to enter land conservation agreements, previously limited to nonprofits and government entities. The bill was prompted by collaboration between the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation and the Ho-Chunk Nation to protect culturally significant land. This legal change ensures long-term conservation regardless of future organizational changes.
