President Biden is set to issue a formal apology to Indigenous communities for over a century of trauma caused by government boarding schools that forcibly removed Indigenous children from their families.

For more than 150 years, from the early 1800s to the 1960s, Indigenous children were taken from their families and sent to assimilation boarding schools, often facing harsh conditions and abuse. On Friday, President Biden will apologize on behalf of the U.S. government, acknowledging this painful history. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, whose own family was affected, highlighted the brutal experiences these children endured, including being stripped of their culture and facing punishment for speaking their native languages.

Haaland has conducted a federal investigation into the legacy of these schools, uncovering numerous cases of unmarked graves where children were buried away from their homes. Her recommendations include this formal acknowledgment, which she believes is vital for healing and recognition of Native American history as part of American history. Biden emphasized the importance of this apology, noting that it should have been made long ago, as a first step towards remedying the trauma experienced by Indigenous communities.
