Why It Matters

America’s story did not begin in 1776.

For thousands of years before the United States was founded, Indigenous Nations across Turtle Island governed thriving communities with sophisticated systems of leadership, diplomacy, and accountability. Their ideas about governance, consensus, and shared responsibility influenced the democratic principles that helped shape the United States.

Yet America’s history is also one of profound contradiction.

While the nation celebrated ideals of liberty and self-government, Native peoples faced displacement, broken treaties, forced removal, assimilation policies, and ongoing threats to Tribal sovereignty.

Understanding this history doesn’t diminish America—it completes it.

Native Nations have endured for thousands of years. Their cultures, governments, and communities continue to thrive, and their voices remain essential to America’s present and future.

What It Means to Be #NativeAware

Being #NativeAware means making a commitment to learn, listen, and act with respect.

It means learning about the Tribal Nations whose homelands you live on, listening to Native voices and perspectives, and recognizing that Native communities are living, vibrant Nations—not simply part of history. It also means supporting Native-owned businesses, artists, and entrepreneurs, reading books by Indigenous authors, attending Native cultural events when invited, and sharing accurate information that helps others better understand Native history and cultures.

Every step toward greater awareness helps create greater understanding.
