National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Events Abound
On September 30th, Canada observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, to honor Indigenous children who suffered in residential schools. This day, established as a federal holiday in 2021, serves as a time for reflection and healing, symbolized by the orange shirt inspired by Phyllis Webstad’s story, a survivor of residential schools. The shirt has become a powerful reminder of the cultural loss and trauma faced by Native children.
Events across Canada and parts of the U.S. include memorials, community gatherings, and educational programs. In Rapid City, South Dakota, a memorial walk honors children who died at the Rapid City Boarding School, while the Canadian Football League (CFL) features Indigenous-themed logos to raise awareness and support Indigenous communities. The day emphasizes the importance of remembering this painful history and recognizing its ongoing impact on Indigenous families today.
