The Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation has established the Three Affiliated Tribes National Park in North Dakota’s Badlands by acquiring 2,100 acres of former ranchland adjacent to the Fort Berthold Reservation. The land, part of the tribes’ original treaty area, is now being preserved and developed for cultural and recreational use—including hiking, kayaking, and wildlife viewing. The park, currently open to foot traffic with a free permit, aims to support tourism and environmental restoration while reconnecting the tribes with their ancestral lands. Future plans include building trails, a visitor center, and a campground, all with careful stewardship of the rugged and ecologically sensitive landscape. Tribal leaders see the park as a long-term investment in both cultural heritage and environmental healing.
