Old Fort Niagara has announced plans to build a replica 18th-century Native American dwelling to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. This new structure will serve as a Native American Education Center, highlighting the role and experiences of Native Americans during the Revolution, especially those who sought refuge at the Fort.
The center will feature historically accurate interior spaces and artifacts, with Native interpreters sharing stories on culture, diplomacy, and survival. It will also host educational programs, workshops on traditional Native skills, and community gatherings.
With $200,000 already raised and a $50,000 fundraising goal remaining, the Fort aims to complete the building by spring, adjacent to the visitor center. Leaders from Native communities and Fort Niagara emphasize the center’s importance in preserving and sharing Indigenous history and strengthening cultural understanding for future generations.
