The U.S. Department of Justice has launched the next phase of its multi-year initiative, Operation Not Forgotten, to address the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous people (MMIP). This initiative, part of the Task Force on Missing and Murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives (Operation Lady Justice), started in 2023 and includes the FBI deploying 60 personnel to 10 cities for temporary assignments. The FBI will collaborate with tribal law enforcement and the Bureau of Indian Affairs to investigate major crimes in Native communities. The task force also aims to focus on cold cases, support victims’ families, and promote prevention strategies.

A notable success involved the 2023 conviction of Tre C. James for the murder of Navajo woman Jamie Yazzie, whose remains were found in 2021 after a lengthy search. While some activists appreciate the increased resources, they emphasize the importance of respecting tribal sovereignty and improving communication with tribal authorities. The FBI’s work on MMIP cases continues, with over 4,000 unresolved cases, highlighting the urgent need for further support and interagency collaboration to bring justice to Native communities.
