A bill in South Dakota to make Native American culture and history a required part of the curriculum failed to pass in the Senate. Originally, Senate Bill 196 would have mandated the teaching of the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings, a set of standards adopted by the state’s Board of Education with tribal input. The bill was amended to involve more input from tribal leaders and the Indian Education Advisory Council in rewriting the standards, but it still failed with a 28-7 vote. Some senators, like Sen. John Carley, argued that the bill was redundant and that teachers have more pressing priorities. Meanwhile, Governor Larry Rhoden signed a law requiring all certified teachers in South Dakota to take a course in Indian Studies.
