A rare white buffalo calf was born in Yellowstone National Park, fulfilling a Lakota prophecy associated with hope and renewal. Chief Arvol Looking Horse, a Lakota spiritual leader, described the birth as both a blessing and a warning, emphasizing the need for increased environmental stewardship. The calf was spotted by a visitor shortly after its birth on June 4, 2024, and is considered a significant symbol in Lakota culture, akin to a second coming.
The birth follows a harsh winter that led to the culling of many buffalo in the park. Despite park officials not confirming the calf’s birth, its characteristics align with those of a sacred white buffalo, which are highly revered by various Native American tribes. The naming ceremony and a celebration of Wakan Gli, the calf, served as a reminder of the importance of respecting nature and the challenges faced by buffalo populations, particularly amid tensions between ranchers and conservation efforts.
