A Meal to be Thankful for

   By Monica Valdez

This Thanksgiving, 62-year-old Ronald B. will celebrate quietly at home on the Pine Ridge Reservation. He doesn’t have a car and walks everywhere, but thanks to a Thanksgiving Individual Meal Bag he received through our program partner, Regina T., he’ll still enjoy a complete holiday meal.

The bag included a frozen turkey, boxes of stuffing and mashed potatoes, and a can of cranberry sauce. Ronald plans to fry his turkey, his favorite part of the meal, and enjoy all the fixings. “Thank you very much for your kindness and your help,” he said to donors.

Ronald lives on a limited income and relies on social security. He’s never had a steady job but is now looking for work, hoping to earn enough to cover his basic needs. Help from partners like Regina makes a real difference.

Each weekday, Ronald visits the Pine Ridge Elderly Meals Center for lunch and conversation. He told us that, along with the food, the people and atmosphere keep him coming back.

Like many in the community, he faces daily challenges with transportation. Without a vehicle, he walks everywhere. Thankfully, he lives close enough to the center to make it there each day.

Regina, who runs the Elderly Meals Center, was grateful to help Elders enjoy a warm Thanksgiving meal this year. “Some people were amazed,” she said. “With the fixings along with that, it’s even more appreciated. Everybody knows this office is where they come for help.”

The Thanksgiving Individual Meal Bag service is available through the Northern Plains Reservation Aid® (NPRA) program of Partnership With Native Americans® (PWNA).

On the Pine Ridge Reservation, where nearly half of the residents live below the poverty line, a Thanksgiving meal means more than a full plate. It’s a reminder that someone cares.
