Most Popular Blogs of 2024

   By Moderator

Despite politics dominating the news cycle this year, we are reflecting on some of our breakthrough blogs from 2024. Our blogs bring focus to Indian Country through topics such as film, climate change, and Native representation. This helps individuals and organizations become more NativeAware®. And that’s great because awareness in itself is a first step to changing lives on the reservations.

Culture/History/Justice Blogs

Considering the highest views and engagements, your favorite blogs of 2024 center around history, culture, and justice. Here are the opening excerpts:

  • Congrats to Lily Gladstone & Killers of the Flower Moon for Authenticity – “Entering Oscars season, Lily Gladstone is at the top of everyone’s list for her performance as Mollie Kyle in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. This is greatly deserved attention for her portrayal of the Osage matriarch who fought like hell to honor her sister, family, and Tribe.”
  • 5 Films with Accurate Native Representation – “One of the biggest challenges facing Native Americans today is being misunderstood. This comes from incomplete or inaccurate history taught in schools, stereotypes, election statistics, lack of inclusion in research, and Hollywood. The truth is, most Americans hold at least some misconception about Native people, history and funding. To help you become more NativeAware®, here are 5 diverse shows/films with accurate representation of Native history and life today.”
  • Celebrate the Elders on Grandparents Day – “In the U.S., we observe National Grandparents Day on the Sunday after Labor Day. But some grandparents, like the Indigenous Elders, are cherished and revered every day. Whether feeding them first at gatherings, giving them the most comfortable seats, or waiting for them to dance first at powwows, they are always top of mind. This bodes well for Native American children too, about half of whom are being raised by their grandparents on reservations PWNA serves. The relations between grandparents and grandchildren are in part responsible for the resilience of Native people and communities.”

Water & Climate Change Blogs

Your favorite blogs also show a high interest in topics on water and water justice, such as these:

  • The #1 Predictor of Running Water at Home – “Clean water is a basic human right but not necessarily an equal opportunity. In the United States, communities of color face unequal access to water – and this impacts 48% of households on Native American reservations. That’s why we’re rallying around the U.N. theme of “Water for Peace” on World Water Day… We hope you’ll join us.”
  • How to Honor the Tribes on Earth Day – “Have you ever wondered how Native Americans celebrate Earth Day? Here at PWNA, we often hear this question, and the answer is the same as they do every other day. Native Americans have been good stewards of Mother Earth since time immemorial – encompassing food, water, climate change,  natural resources, and …”
